Grambling Drops Heartbreaker to Jaguars

BATON ROUGE, La. (Men's basketball) – With 32 second left in the second half, a layup sealed Grambling State University's loss on Saturday evening. The Tigers three game win streak was snapped as the team was defeated by Southern University with a score of 67-66.

With the loss, GSU drops to 10-13, overall, and 5-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Southern earns an overall record of 10-13 and 6-5 in SWAC play.

The first half of play saw both teams trading baskets. At the 3:08 mark, Southern's Shawn Prudhomme scored a jumper to make the score 28-26. Grambling would not be able to keep pace and ended the half trailing by 13 with a score of 39-26.

Grambling started out sluggish in the second half as SU extended their lead to 17 points with a score of 45-28 with 17:53 left. As the clocked ticked down, the Tigers began to chip away at the lead to make the game competitive. At the 4:32 mark, Avery Ugba tied the score at 62 with a free throw. Ugba would give GSU a two point lead after he was fouled and made both free throws, 64-62. The teams ended the game trading baskets but Christopher Thomas's layup was the dagger for the Tigers.

Two G-Men finished the night with double-doubles. Ugba led the way with 26 points, 17 rebounds and two blocks. Remond Brown recorded 10 points and 11 rebounds. Ervin Mitchell had the second highest point total of the night with 21. Nigel Ribeiro had a nose for the ball with four steals.

The Tigers were 36.5 percent from the field, 21.1 percent from the three point arc, and 53.3 percent from the free throw line.

Southern had three player double figures by the end of the game. Prudhomme, Thomas, and Trelun Banks finished the game with 19, 17, and 13 points. The duo of Prudhomme and Thomas accounted for eight rebounds apiece. Thomas recorded three blocks and Banks ended with five assists.

The Jaguars were 41.8 percent from the field, 40 percent from the arc, and 71.4 percent from the stripe.
