GRAMBLING, La. (Softball) -- The Grambling State University softball team took on the Centenary College Ladies in a mid-week double header on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Tigers were able to score two wins over Centenary.
With the win, GSU moves to 8-16 on the season. The Ladies drop to 3-11.
Game One
In game one, the Lady Tigers got on the board first with a run each in the bottom of the first inning and third inning.
Kenyshae Beasley crossed home plate on a wild pitch, 1-0. Beasley walked to reach first, moved to second when
Mercedes Williams grounded out, and stole third. The second run happened when Beasley scored on
Hailey Haynes bunt single, 2-0. Beasley singled to reach first base.
Centenary scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to knot the game at 2.
GSU answered back swiftly with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, 6-2.
The Ladies scored just one more run in the seventh inning, 7-3.
Williams had the most runs batted with three while Beasley had the most runs with three. McKenzie Johnson finished the game with the most hits with three.
Caitlin McDowell picked up the win with a complete game pitched for five hits, three runs, two walks, and five strike outs.
Kelcie Bourgeois (0-2) suffered the loss for the Ladies with three inning pitched for five hits, two earned runs, one walk, and one strike out.
Game Two
In the second game, Grambling scored quickly in the bottom of the first inning with two runs. The first run came when
Tiffany Doss singled to left to score
Tia Coleman and
Mercedes Williams, 2-0.
Centenary made a push in the second and third inning with eight runs to the Lady Tigers' two runs. The Ladies scored another run in the top of the fourth inning, 9-4.
GSU rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs to make the score, 9-8.
Centenary scored on run each in the fifth and seventh innings in an attempt to keep the Lady Tigers at bay, 11-8.
Once again, Grambling stepped up and rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 11.
In the extra inning, the Ladies were only able to come up one run compared to the Lady Tigers' two. Bria Aikens doubled to score
Deshuna McDaniel and
Tayler Lenz-Selvera, 13-12.
Beasley, Williams, and Doss were all 3-of-5 at bat. Aikens had the most runs batted in with three.
Caitlin McDowell (7-8) got the win for GSU with 3.2 innings pitched for three hits, one earned run, four walks and one strike out.
Lauren Beadle (0-1) suffered the loss for Centenary with three innings pitched for two hits, one earned run, two walks, and one strike out.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action on Thursday and Friday in Southwestern Athletic Conference play against Alcorn State University in Lorman, Miss. First pitch for Thursday is set for 3 p.m. and on Friday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
