LORMAN, Miss. (Softball) – The Grambling State University softball team traveled to Lorman, Miss. to face Alcorn State University in a three game series. The Lady Tigers played well but dropped all three games in the series.
With the loss, the Lady Tigers move to 8-19, overall, and 0-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Lady Braves improve to an overall record of 6-17 and a 3-0 record in league play.
Game One
GSU dropped game one in five innings with a score of 9-1. The series opener was deadlocked until the third quarter when Alcorn scored two runs. Grambling responded with their lone run of the contest in the fourth quarter when
Tia Coleman stole home, 2-1. Coleman singled to the short stop to reach first base, moved to second as
Hailey Haynes was walked, and stole third.
The Lady Braves stopped the Lady Tigers rally with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Caitlin McDowell (7-9) suffered the lost in circle for Grambling with 4.2 innings pitched for 10 hits, eight earned runs, four walks, and two strike outs.
Robin Harrison (2-4) picked up the win with five innings pitched for two hits, one earned run, one walk, and seven strike outs.
Game Two
In the second game, GSU came out hitting and scored the first two runs. McKenzie Johnson came home as
Tayler Lenz-Selvera singled to the short stop, 1-0. Johnson singled to reach first base, moved to second on
Kenyshae Beasley's bunt, and advanced to third on Hayne's fielder's choice. The second run was scored by Beasley when Coleman was walked with the bases loaded, 2-0.
The Lady Tigers scored one more run at the top of the fourth inning. Beasley scored an unearned run as Haynes singled, 3-0. Beasley singled to reach first and rounded to second base on an error.
Alcorn answered back with one run in the fourth inning, three runs in the fifth inning, and two runs in the sixth inning, 6-3.
Beasley and Lenz-Selvera finished with two hits each. Haynes, Lenz-Selvera, and Coleman each had a run batted in.
D'Maria Matthews (0-3) picked up the loss for Grambling with six innings pitched for six hits, two earned runs, two walks, and three strike outs.
???????Madi Creed (2-4) snapped the win with seven innings pitched for nine hits, three runs, one walk, and four strike outs.
Game Three
The Lady Tigers fell in the closing game of the series with a score of 4-0. ASU scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
McDowell (7-10) suffers the loss for Grambling with six innings pitched for nine hits, one earned run, two walks, and three strike outs.
???????Jazmin Castillo (2-4) snaps up the win for the Lady Braves. Castillo pitched 4.1 innings for five hits, three walks, and one strike out. Ambria Dorsey gets the save with 2.2 innings pitched for two hits and one strike out.
Grambling will host Jarvis Christian College on Tuesday, March 21 in a double header beginning at 1 p.m.
