NEW ORLEANS, La. (Women's basketball)- In an intense match-up from start to finish between the Grambling State University Lady Tigers and the Tulane University Greenwave, Tulane defeated Grambling with a final score of 66-49 in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament.
 
It was a fight for the Lady Tigers to find their rhythm in the first half of the game, scoring at only a 50% field goal average, compared to Tulane's 64.3%. Missed shots and turnovers gave Tulane the opportunity to place a 19 point lead over the Lady Tigers. At halftime, the score was 38-19.
 
In the second half of the game, the Lady Tigers struggled to close the gap in points in an attempt to come out victorious, but buckets from Tulane's Kolby Morgan, Leslie Vorpahl, Harlyn Wyatt and Courtnie Latham (who all finished with double figures in points) made it difficult to do so; extending their lead over the Lady Tigers by 24 in the fourth quarter. Although the Greenwave's journey in the WNIT would take them on towards the third round of the tournament, the Lady Tigers refused to give up and continued to play until the time on the clock expired.
 
"We felt good about our chances… We had our chances, but I just think we ran out of gas. I'm proud of my team. We have nothing to hang our heads down about. We were able to do some great things this year and we have a lot of things to build on going into next year," said interim head coach Freddie Murray.
 
Both Shakyla Hill and Monisha Neal from GSU finished the game with a double-double; 12 points and 10 rebounds apiece. Morgan of Tulane was the lead scorer with 15 points and 5 rebounds.
