NEW ORLEANS, La. – Fourth-seeded Alcorn State defeated No. 6 Grambling State 4-0 on day one of the 2017 SWAC Women's Tennis Tournament played at the Pepsi Tennis Center on Friday.
Alcorn, the defending SWAC champions, won two of the three doubles matches to take the first point in the match. The Lady Braves then won singles matches at Nos. 1, 5 and 6 to knock off the Lady Tigers.
The Alcorn State duo of Chemodanova and Natalia Parchowska won their No. 1 doubles match 6-0 over Grambling State's pairing of
Tanyaradzwa Magunje and
Danna Galeano.
After the Lady Tigers rallied back to even the doubles competition behind a win from Phonephateph Philavvong and
Bryttish Burts over Bianca Birkenstock and Vaganova (6-1), the Lady Braves secured the point with a doubles victory at the No. 3 spot from Maier/Veronika Pytlikova over Galeano/
Anastaysa Reshetnikova (7-5).
Alcorn State advances to play against No. 1 seed Alabama State on Saturday at 9 a.m.
