Lady Tigers snap losing streak with victory

MORAGA, Calif. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team travelled nearly 2,000 miles as the Lady Tigers got a goal by Janee Harris in the first half as GSU snapped its three-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the University of California Riverside on Friday night.

The game was the second contest of the day as CSU Bakersfield defeated Saint Mary's 2-1 in double-overtime in the opening match of the Saint Mary's Soccer Tournament at Saint Mary's Stadium.

"Our defense battled all night," Grambling State first-year head coach Justin Wagar said. "Jordan Woodward played solid in goal and the defense hung tough for our second shutout. This was a big win for our program."

The Lady Tigers (2-3-0) picked up their first shot of the night when Florence David missed the target in the 20th minute. However, Grambling State didn't miss the mark on its second shot in the 24th minute. Harris' first attempt was blocked, but she collected her rebound and fired it past UC Riverside goalkeeper Alanna Guzman for the lone goal of the match.

The Highlanders (2-3-2) had several opportunities as Quinley Quezada finished with five shots, including on target. Makenna Herrero added a pair of shots on goal, but both were stopped by Grambling State goalkeeper Jordan Woodward.

Turning Point
As strange as it may sound, the trip out west to play in the Saint Mary's Tournament could be a turning point for this Grambling State team.

The Lady Tigers have four players on the team representing the state of California, and 11 combined players from Arizona, California, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

One of those players was Harris, who broke free for her first goal of the season and helped Grambling State break a three-game losing streak.
