Boyd leads GSU in loss to Texas Southern

GRAMBLING, La. | Jazmin Boyd led three players into double figures with 13 points, but it wasn't enough as the Grambling State University women's basketball team dropped a 73-63 decision to Texas Southern in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game on Monday evening at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
 
Texas Southern (8-8 overall, 3-2 in SWAC) took advantage of Grambling State's (7-10, 4-2) 35.7 percent (5-of-14) shooting in the fourth quarter to take home the win.
 
Boyd finished with 13 points, one rebound, one assist, and one steal.  Shakyla Hill added 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Justice Coleman registered 10 points.
 
Joyce Kennerson, the nation's top scorer, paced Texas Southern with 23 points, four rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Kaitlyn Palmer contributed 20 points, three rebounds, three assists and one block.  Taylor Robinson added 15 points, six rebounds and one block.
 
Turning Point
The game was tied 49-49 at the end of the third, but Texas Southern took over the game in the fourth quarter.
 
Boyd closed a seven-point gap to four points, 59-55, with 6:06 remaining after a 3-pointer, but Texas Southern answered with an 11-1 run, capped by a Robinson bucket with 2:10 left, giving TSU a 70-56 advantage.
 
A 10-point game was as close as Grambling State got as they fell 73-63 in The Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
 
Inside The Numbers
· Grambling State shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the floor and 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the free-throw line.
· Texas Southern was 26-of-54 (48.1 percent) shooting and 13-of-20 (65.0 percent) from the charity stripe.
· Grambling State finished with 26 rebounds, with 18 coming on the defensive end.
· Texas Southern tallied 42 rebounds, with 28 coming on the defensive glass.
· Grambling State scored 22 points in the paint, 21 off turnovers, two fast break points and eight second-chance points.

· Monisha Neal scored eight points and is now 24 points shy of reaching 1,000 for her collegiate career.
· The last time these two teams met up was at the 2017 Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament, with Texas Southern winning the SWAC Championship with a 70-66 victory.
· Grambling State's next three games will be on the road as GSU faces Jackson State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State.
