Lady Tigers travel to Southern and Alcorn State

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's basketball team will look to keep its winning streak going as the Lady Tigers take to the road for the first time in 2018 with a pair of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) trips to Southern and Alcorn State.
 
Grambling State (5-8 overall, 2-0 SWAC) opened SWAC play with a 78-49 win over Alabama A&M and concluded the two-game homestand with a 93-71 victory over Alabama State. Against the Lady Hornets, Shakyla Hill became the fourth player in NCAA Division I women's basketball history and the first in nearly 25 years to register a quadruple-double as she finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals.
 
Southern (2-9, 1-1) comes into Saturday's contest seeking its second straight win, while Alcorn State (5-8, 1-1) will play host to Jackson State on Saturday, before Grambling State comes to town on Monday.
 
ABOUT SOUTHERN
• The Lady Jaguars are 1-1 after a pair of SWAC games as Southern defeated Texas Southern, 67-57, on New Year's Day, but dropped a 69-62 decision to Prairie View A&M on Jan. 3.
 
• Southern is averaging 63.3 points per game, while its opponents are averaging 73.3 points. The Lady Jaguars are shooting 35.5 percent (256-of-721) from the floor and 72.8 percent (134-of-184) from the free-throw line.
 
• Briana Green paces the Southern offense by averaging 15.4 points and 6.5 boards per game. Samantha Duncan is second on the team in scoring at 11.7 points per game.
 
ABOUT ALCORN STATE
• The Lady Braves opened the New Year with a 73-72 road victory, but fell, 91-57 on Jan. 3 to Texas Southern.
 
• Alcorn State is averaging 69.2 points per game, while its opponents are averaging 72.6 points. The Lady Braves are shooting 36.3 percent (315-of-868) from the floor and 61.6 percent (130-of-211) from the charity stripe.
 
• Tia Sanders leads three Lady Braves players in double figures at 15.5 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. Alexus Freeman is averaging 14.8 points and 4.1 rebounds, while Cloe Lane is averaging 10.2 points and 4.2 boards.
 
LAST TIME OUT
• Grambling State is coming off a 93-71 victory on Wednesday against Alabama State.
 
• The Lady Tigers led 21-18 after one quarter and outscored Alabama State, 19-15, in the second to take a 40-33 advantage into the second half.  
 
• Shakyla Hill had four points, four steals, three rebounds and three assists at the break, but finished with a quadruple-double of 15 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals and 10 assists. 
 
• Grambling State shot 33-of-70 (47.1 percent) from the field and 16-of-22 (72.7 percent) from the free-throw line.
   
NOTABLES
• Shakyla Hill is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.6 points. She ranks second nationally (first in the SWAC) in steals and second nationally (first in the SWAC) in steals per game.
 
• Deja McKinney leads the Lady Tigers offensive at 13.0 points in all 13 games played this season.
  
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
• Shakyla Hill surpassed the 1,000-point plateau on Dec. 10 in a 73-49 loss at Alabama. Hill will be recognized with a pregame ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 13 against Prairie View A&M.
 
• Shakyla Hill became the fourth NCAA Division I women's basketball player in history to register a quadruple-double as she finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals and 10 assists against Alabama State (Jan. 3).
  
PRESEASON POLL
• The Lady Tigers were picked to finish second in the preseason coaches' poll as voted on by conference head coaches and sports information directors. Grambling State junior guard Shakyla Hill was selected the SWAC Preseason Player of the Year.
 
SCHEDULE NOTES
• Grambling State played just three games at home prior to opening conference play, registering a 2-1 mark, with its only loss coming to No. 17 Florida State. The Lady Tigers will play nine SWAC games at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
  
GRAMBLING STATE BASKETBALL HISTORY
• Grambling State became the only SWAC school to advance in a postseason tournament as the Lady Tigers defeated Ole Miss, 78-75, in the first round of the WNIT last season.
 
• The Lady Tigers reached the SWAC Championship game last season, but fell to Texas Southern, 70-66.
   
UP NEXT
• After the two-game SWAC road swing, the Tigers return home for two games, starting on Saturday, Jan. 13 against Prairie View A&M. Grambling State concludes the two-game homestand on Monday, Jan. 15 against Texas Southern. That contest will be broadcasted live on the SWAC Digital Network.
