Holt’s penalty kick lifts GSU past TSU

GRAMBLING, La. | In a showdown of two of the top teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Grambling State got a goal by Kaylee Holt in the 51st minute and extended its shutout streak to 390 minutes as GSU blanked Texas Southern, 1-0, during Senior Day at the GSU Soccer Complex.
 
Grambling State (9-7 overall, 6-1 SWAC – 18 points) entered the day tied for second place in the SWAC standings (based on points) and two points behind conference leader Howard. On Sunday, Howard defeated Alabama State to remain one point ahead in the standings (19 points)
 
 After a scoreless first half, Grambling State broke free with a goal in the 51st minute. Holt, who is now second on the team in goals (eight) and points (19) scored on a penalty kick to give GSU a 1-0 lead. The goal marked her third made attempt in four tries this season and also gave her a team-leading fourth game-winning goal of the season.
 
Defensively, Rita Siaha earned her second consecutive shutout, while Grambling State, which went 6-2 at home this season, completed its fourth straight shutout.
 
GSU, which has defeated Texas Southern twice over the last two seasons, has not allowed a goal over the last four games and has not surrendered a goal since the 60th minute in a 1-0 loss to Howard on Sept. 28.
