Grambling State rolls past Champion Christian

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University men's basketball team had four players in double figures and dominated from start to finish in cruising past Champion Christian College, 99-58, on Tuesday night at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
 
Grambling State (2-2), which snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory, led 49-27 at the break and outscored Champion Christian, 50-31, in the second half.
 
Dallas Polk-Hilliard registered a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds to pace Grambling State. Axel Mpoyo came off the bench to provide 17 points, seven boards, four assists and three blocked shots, while Ivy Smith, Jr. recorded 12 points, six assists, five rebounds, five steals and one block. Nigel Ribeiro was perfect from the floor (5-for-5) and finished with 10 points, one assist and one steal.
 
Vernon Burns led Champion Christian with 17 points, three rebounds and two steals. Xavier Chambers registered 12 points, while Javan McBurrows tallied 11.
 
Turning Point
Grambling State raced out to a 21-4 advantage after a dunk by Prince Moss and extended the margin to 49-27 at the break.
 
GSU stretched the lead to 70-38 after a Nigel Ribeiro layup with 10:48 remaining and cruised the win.

> Grambling State shot 59.4 percent (38-of-64) from the floor and 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the charity stripe
> Champion Christian was 23-of-65 (35.4 percent) from the field and 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) from the foul line
> GSU registered 51 rebounds, with 39 coming off the defensive glass
> CCC pulled down 28 rebounds, with seven coming on the offensive glass
> Grambling State finished with 54 points in the paint, 47 bench points, 21 points off 16 Champion Christian turnovers, 14 fast-break points and seven second-chance points
> Champion Christian tallied 35 bench points, 16 points in the paint, 12 points off 17 Grambling State turnovers and five second-chance points

Grambling State returns to Fort Myers Tip-Off Classic action this weekend with a pair of games in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The Tigers will play host Niagara at 3 p.m. on Friday and conclude the two-day event with a matchup against either St. Francis Brooklyn or IUPUI at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
