GSU looks to get back into win column vs. JSU

GRAMBLING, La. | After taking nearly a week off, the Grambling State University women's basketball team will look capture a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Jackson State on Saturday. Tip-off for the Breast Cancer Awareness game at the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center is set for 3 p.m. 
 
Grambling State (12-12 overall, 9-4 SWAC) surrendered its five-game win streak after dropping a 66-56 loss to Texas Southern on Monday.
 
Jackson State (12-10, 7-6) looks to improve in SWAC play after riding a three-game losing streak.
 
ABOUT JACKSON STATE 
* Jackson State is averaging 72.5 points per game, while their opponents are averaging 66.4 points.
* Jackson State is shooting 38.6 percent (606-1570) from the floor and 63.7 percent (317-of-498) from the foul line.
* Christina Ellis is leading the Jackson State offense in double digits at 13.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, while Derica Wiggins is second on the team in scoring at 11.9 points and 3.8 boards per game.
 
LAST TIME OUT
* Grambling State was unable to keep their winning streak alive after falling to Texas Southern, 66-56.
* Shakyla Hill paced Grambling State with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Jazmin Boyd tallied 13 points and four assists, while Kailyn Gideon finished with nine boards and a game-high seven blocks.
* Grambling State shot 29.9 percent (20-of-67) from the floor and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the free-throw line.
 
NOTABLES 
*Shakyla Hill was selected the SWAC College Sports Madness Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
* Jazmin Boyd leads the SWAC in free-throw percentage (85.5 percent).
*Shakyla Hill is first on the team in scoring (averaging 14.9 points), field-goal attempts, field goals made, free-throw attempts, free-throws made, rebounds (offensive and defensive), rebound average, assists and steals. She ranks first in the SWAC in assists (123) and steals (118), second nationally in steals and steals per game (4.8) and third nationally in triple-doubles.
* Kailyn Gideon continues to lead the conference in blocked shots (2.0 bpg.)
 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
* Shakyla Hill surpassed the 1,000-point plateau on Dec. 10 in a 73-49 loss to Alabama.
* Monisha Neal became the second Grambling State women's basketball player this season to score 1,000 career-high points.
* Shakyla Hill became the fourth NCAA Division I women's basketball player in history to register a quadruple-double as she finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals and 10 assists against Alabama State (Jan. 3).
 
PREASEASON POLL
* Grambling State was picked to finish second in the preseason coaches' poll as voted on by conference head coaches and sports information directors. GSU guard Shakyla Hill was selected the SWAC Preseason Player of the Year.
 
GRAMBLING STATE BASKETBALL HISTORY
* Grambling State became the only SWAC school to advance in a postseason tournament as the GSU defeated Ole Miss, 78-75, in the first round of the WNIT last season.
* Grambling State reached the SWAC Championship game last season, but fell to Texas Southern, 70-66.

Grambling State will return to action at home against Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Saturday, Feb. 24 (Senior Day). Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
