Lady Tigers to play host to Southern and Alcorn State

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's basketball team looks to improve in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play, this time at home, as they host Southern University on Saturday, Feb. 3 (High School Day) followed by a contest against Alcorn State on Monday, Feb. 5 (Greek Night). Tipoff in Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday and 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
 
Grambling State (9-11 overall, 6-3 SWAC) improved in SWAC play after two consecutive wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State.
 
Southern (9-9, 8-1) is riding a seven-game winning streak, having only suffered one loss in conference play to Prairie View A&M.
 
Alcorn State (9-11, 5-4) dropped a 64-56 decision to Southern on Jan. 27.
 
ABOUT SOUTHERN
  • The Lady Jaguars are averaging 66.3 points per game, while its opponents are averaging 67.1 points.
  • Southern is shooting 38.3 percent (438-of-1143) from the floor and 71.9 percent (235-of-327) from the charity stripe.
  • Briana Green is leading the Lady Jaguars' offense in double digits at 16.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, followed by Samantha Duncan at 11.1 points and 4.0 boards per game.
 
ABOUT ALCORN STATE
  • The Lady Braves are averaging 65.1 points per game, while its opponents are averaging 69.8 points.
  • Alcorn State is shooting 37.8 percent (486-of-1286) from the floor and 59.9 percent (208-of-347) from the foul line.
  • Tia Sanders is leading the Lady Braves' offense in double digits at 16.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Alexus Freeman is second on the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game and 3.6 boards per game.
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • Grambling State is coming off two road wins, a 66-57 decision to Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Jan. 27) and a 64-62 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Monday night.
  • Against Mississippi Valley State, Shakyla Hill led the Lady Tigers with 20 points, 7-of-11 shooting, with nine rebounds, seven assists, five steals and one blocked shot. Justice Coleman added a career-high 18 points and four boards.
  • Grambling State shot 24-of-50 (48 percent) from the field and 13-of-19 (68.4 percent) from the free-throw line.
 
NOTABLES
  • Shakyla Hill is first on the team in scoring (averaging 13.5 points), field goal attempts, field goals made, free-throw attempts, free-throws made, rebounds (offensive and defensive), rebound average, assists and steals. She ranks first in the SWAC in assists and steals, second nationally in steals and steals per game and third nationally in triple-doubles
  • Kailyn Gideon continues to lead the conference in blocked shots. 
    NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
  • Shakyla Hill surpassed the 1,000-point plateau on Dec. 10 in a 73-49 loss to Alabama.
  • Monisha Neal became the second Grambling State women's basketball player this season to score1,000 career-high points. Neal was only eight points away from reaching her feat, which she achieved last Saturday against Arkansas Pine-Bluff. The Lewisville, Texas native finished the night with 11 points, five boards, three steals, and two assists.
  • Shakyla Hill became the fourth NCAA Division I women's basketball player in history to register a quadruple-double as she finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals and 10 assists against Alabama State (Jan. 3). 

PRESEASON POLL
  • Grambling State was picked to finish second in the preseason coaches' poll as voted on by conference head coaches and sports information directors. GSU guard Shakyla Hill was selected the SWAC Preseason Player of the Year.
 
GRAMBLING STATE BASKETBALL HISTORY
  • Grambling State became the only SWAC school to advance in a postseason tournament as the GSU defeated Ole Miss, 78-75, in the first round of the WNIT last season.
  • Grambling State reached the SWAC Championship game last season, but fell to Texas Southern, 70-66.
 
UP NEXT
  • Following the two-game homestand, Grambling State will travel to Texas to play Prairie View A&M on Saturday, Feb. 10, followed by a contest against Texas Southern on Monday, Feb. 12.
