Lady Tigers drop pair to conclude Schutt Invitational

DENTON, Texas | The Grambling State University softball team wrapped up play at the Schutt Invitational, hosted by the University of North Texas, on Sunday afternoon with a pair of losses as the Lady Tigers were blanked, 11-0 by Creighton and fell 14-3 to North Texas.
 
In the opener against Creighton, the Bluejays scored five runs in the second inning and six in the third to cruise to the victory.
 
Hannah Martin (0-2) was one of three pitchers used against Creighton as she pitched two innings and surrendered eight runs (six earned) on six hits and walked four. D'Maria Matthews and Caitlin McDowell worked in relief.
 
In the second game against North Texas, the Mean Green plated two runs in the first and four in the second to grab a 6-0 advantage. Grambling State (1-10) responded with one run in the third as Cameron Ellis scored when Lisa Brooks singled down the left-field line to cut the margin to 6-1.
 
North Texas added a run in the bottom of the third to take a 7-1 lead, but the Lady Tigers answered with two in the top of the fourth.
 
Adams began the inning with a homer to right center. With two down, Versace Hicks-Butler walked and advanced to second when Tiffany Doss singled up the middle. Monique Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Kenyshae Beasley singled to plate Hicks-Butler from third.
 
The Mean Green put the game away with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.
 
D'Maria Matthews (0-4) took the loss in 1.2 innings pitched. She gave up six runs on seven hits, with one strikeout. McDowell worked 2.1 innings in relief and surrendered eight runs (all unearned) on five hits, with two walks and one strikeout.
 
Inside the Numbers
· In the second game, Grambling State had eight hits and stranded six on base.
· Kenyshae Beasley went 3-for-3, with an RBI, while Tiffany Doss was 2-for-2.
 
Up Next
Grambling State return to the GSU Softball Complex for a non-conference doubleheader as the Lady Tigers play host to Texas College on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
