Lady Bulldogs take two from Lady Tigers

GRAMBLING, La.| The Grambling State University softball team was swept in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) doubleheader by Alabama A&M, 16-5 in the first game, and 12-0 in the second game, on Saturday afternoon at the GSU Softball Complex.
 
In the opener, Grambling State (8-16 Overall, 0-5 SWAC) trailed 16-2 after four innings, but in the bottom of the fifth, Tia Coleman homered to left center to plate two runners as the Lady Tigers fell 16-5.
 
In the second game, Alabama A&M (12-11, 4-2) plated nine runs on seven hits, including a pair of homers and cruised to the 12-0 victory.
 
Game 1 (16-5 loss)
Alabama A&M opened the game with two runs in the first inning, but Grambling State cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the frame as Allye Hartley drove in Hailey Haynes.
 
However, the Lady Bulldogs scored two runs in the second and exploded for a five-run third to take a 9-1 advantage into the bottom half of the inning.
 
The Lady Tigers trimmed the deficit to 9-2 with one run in the bottom of the third, but Alabama A&M plated four in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
 
Game 2 (12-0 loss)
In the second game, Alabama A&M used a nine-run first inning and didn't look back.
 
The Lady Bulldogs scored one in the second and added two more in the fifth for the 12-0 win.
 
Inside The Numbers
* In the opener, Grambling State finished with five runs on four hits and left four on base.
* Hailey Haynes went 2-for-3, with two RBIs and two runs scored.
* Tia Coleman homered and registered three RBIs.
* Allye Hartley finished with one hit and added one RBI.
* D'Maria Matthews (2-7) took the loss as she gave up 16 runs on 11 hits, with six walks and one strikeout in five innings.
* Imani Largin picked up the win with five runs (three earned) on four hits and three strikeouts.
* In Game 2, Morgan Adams and Mercedes Williams each went 1-for-2.
* Hannah Martin (0-3) picked up the loss in 0.2 innings giving up nine runs (five earned) on seven hits, with one run, and no strikeouts.
* Caitlyn McDowell pitched 4.1 innings and gave up three runs on three hits, with three strikeouts.
* Lauren Hayden (7-1) picked up the victory in 5.0 innings.

Grambling State returns to action on Friday, March 30 as the Lady Tigers open up a SWAC series against Texas Southern. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at the GSU Softball Complex.
