GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team suffered a setback in the season opener with a 5-0 loss to Lamar on Friday night at the LU Soccer Complex.
"We didn't play for each other tonight nor as a team," Grambling State head coach
Justin Wagar said. "Lamar is too good of a team to try to beat them as individuals. We have a lot of work to do before our next game to improve and work together. Sunday we'll get another opportunity to see what we're made of after a punch to the gut wake-up call tonight."
Lamar (1-0-0) broke the 0-0 tie in the 15th minute when Jocelyn Hanrath assisted on Kelso Peskin's break-away goal.
The Cardinals added to the advantage with back-to-back goals in the 24th and 25th minute. Lucy Ashworth netted both goals, first off the assist from Sophia Manibo on a shot from about 15-yards out and the second was unassisted from 25-yards away to give Lamar a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Cardinals put the game away in the 37th minute with the fourth goal of the night when Michele Scholz assisted on Ali Hebert's goal.
After the break, Peskin notched her second of the night in the 55th minute to give the Cardinals a 5-0 advantage.
Turning Point
Down 1-0 after 15 minutes, the Lady Tigers (0-1-1) could not prevent the Cardinals from two quick strikes, which gave Lamar a 3-0 lead.
Lucy Ashworth delivered the dagger with a goal in 23:24 and 24:36 as Grambling State could not recover.
