GSU nearly pulls off amazing comeback in loss to JSU

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's basketball team trailed by as many as 28 points early in the third quarter and rallied to take its first lead with just under two minutes remaining, but could not overcome Jackson State down the stretch in a 77-74 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) loss on Saturday afternoon at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
 
Grambling State (8-11 overall, 5-2 SWAC) saw its three-game SWAC win streak snapped with the loss. Jackson State (6-12, 2-5) led 19-11 after one period and took a 42-19 advantage into the break. JSU stretched the advantage to 51-23 with 7:31 left in the third and headed to the final period with a 58-43 lead.
 
Shakyla Hill registered her 28th double-double with 18 points and 10 assists, along with seven steals and six rebounds, to pace the Grambling State offense. Jazmin Boyd registered 16 points off the bench, with three boards and one assist, while Camryn London added 16 points, including three 3-pointers, along with three rebounds. Mylashia Yancey tallied 12 points, five boards, one assists and one block.
 
Christina Ellis led Jackson State with a game-high 26 points, six assists, five steals and five boards. Marniesha Hamer came off the bench and added 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals, while D'Asia Mitchell recorded 10 points, five rebounds and three steals. Sumer Williams led the way on the glass with a game-high 15 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive end.
 
Turning Point
Grambling State fell behind, 51-23, after a bucket by Christina Ellis with 7:31 left in the third period.
 
GSU chipped away at the deficit and cut the margin to 58-43 entering the final quarter.
 
Jackson State extended the margin to 62-45 after a Marniesha Hamer layup with 62-45 remaining, but Grambling State used a 20-9 run, capped by a Jazmin Boyd layup to close the gap to 71-65 with just over three minutes left.
 
GSU got buckets by Boyd and London to grab its first lead, 72-71, with 1:51 left. However, Jackson State closed out the game on a 6-2 run to pick up the 77-74 victory.

> Grambling State was 26-of-67 (38.8 percent) shooting and 18-of-30 (60.0 percent) from the charity stripe
> Jackson State shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the field and 54.2 percent (13-of-124 from the free-throw line

> JSU pulled down 55 rebounds, with 35 coming on the defensive end
