GRAMBLING, La. l There were a total of 30 ties and 13 lead changes between Grambling State and Centenary College women's volleyball teams, but it would be the Lady Tigers to claim the victory, winning three of the sets out of five (24-16, 23-24, 25-21, 25-27, 13-15) on Tuesday at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
"A total team effort. For the last three weeks on the court, we have struggled (to score on offense and to complete our cycles on defense) largely due to the loss of four players to injuries and the flu. Our team stepped up and decided to fight for the win. Two of our freshmen players (Gillian Jones and Charity Gibson) have stepped up to the plate as they have been called upon to lead the team on offense as setters. Their hard work and efforts are greatly appreciated. I look forward to this young team playing some great volleyball," said head coach Keys-Johnson.
Four of the Lady Tigers ended the night with double digit kills; Linzy Woods led the team with 16 (and a pair of digs) while Tamria Johnson, Rayven Mckenzie and Gillian Jones (who also added 18 digs each) recorded 10 a piece. Kabria Dame registered 29 digs, Chasity Nicks registered 11 and Charity Gibson tallied 10.
Alyssa Davis paced Centenary (10-19, 5-7 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) with 15 kills and 19 digs, Kristian Loving added 13 digs along with a solo kill, Rachel Demerjian chipped in a solo kill with 11 digs, Lauren Kelly registered 11 kills and five digs and Marissa Sandoval added 32 kills along with one kill.
