JACKSON, MISS. l The Grambling State University women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match to Jackson State but defeated Mississippi Valley State, 3-0, on Friday, in the second round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Round Up.
"We played some good volleyball today. Against Jackson State we showed some good stuff. Our players were able to execute perfectly in the second set, not making any hitting error. Our defensive game was on; moving fast and pursuing all balls... We need to peak and stay; not peak sometimes," said head coach
Demetria Keys-Johnson.
Jackson State (12-14 overall, 8-2 SWAC) won the first, third and fourth sets; 25-22, 25-19, 25-17, 25-15 to win the match.
Chasity Nicks,
Linzy Woods and Tamria Johnson each chipped in eight kills a piece, while Kabia Dame recorded 11 digs.
Jylen Whitten finished the match with 17 kills and 11 digs followed by Camry Dabney with 14 kills and a solo dig. Alana Washington tallied one kill and registered 19 digs.
Against Mississippi Valley (4-23, 1-10) Grambling State won all three sets; 25-22, 25-15, 25-23, to win the match.
"We were able to allow a key player of ours (Kayla Cadwell) that eas injured to play and see how she felt. She did an excellent job and we cannot wait to have her back to 100%. Overall, alot of players got a chance to see the floor today, allowing them to see their progress."
Nicks led the Lady Tigers with eight kills and six digs and Dame recorded a total of 16 digs.
Tyler Caliste paced Mississippi Valley with nine kills, while Jessica Bell tallied 11 digs.
