Coleman and Washington lead Grambling State past Centenary

GRAMBLING, La. I Five of the Grambling State University women's basketball players finished the night with points in double figures, including Candice Parramore who was just two rebounds shy of a triple-double and Mylashia Yancy recorded a double-double as head coach Freddie Murray and the Lady Tigers picked up their first win on Wednesday, defeating Centenary, 106-42, at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

Justice Coleman (who shot 100% from the free-throw line) and Brandi Washington combined for a total 50 points, each scoring 25 a piece, to assist the Lady Tigers in their victory. Coleman also recorded six rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Washington registered five boards, seven steals and three assists. Parramore ended the contest with 21 points, 10 steals, eight rebounds and two assists, while Yancy recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and one steal. Markisha Body tallied 12 points and a solo rebound. Tacoya Allen paced Centenary with 11 points and three rebounds, while Bre Frierson registered 11 points as well along with five rebounds.

Grambling State (1-3) held a strong lead for 39 minutes and 10 seconds throughout the game against their Centenary (0-3).

In the first quarter, the Grambling State went on an 9-1 run. At the end of the quarter, the Lady Tigers tallied a 14-point lead, 24-10.

The Lady Tigers shot 75% from the free-throw line in the second quarter, and had extended an even larger lead over Centenary, this time by 26 points at the halftime buzzer. Coleman had registered 11 points, followed by Washington with nine.Frierson paced Centenary with five points while Arnelia Bagwell pulled down four boards and recorded two points.

During the second half of the game, the Lady Tigers retained the same momentum displayed from the first half. The Lady Tigers' best scoring run was for 15 points in the third quarter. With a now 45-point deficit at the end of the third, 74-29, Centenary would not be able to recover from such a large lead. Grambling State's largest lead of the game was recorded in the fourth quarter with 64 points.

* Grambling State shot 47.7% (42-of-88) from the floor and 68.8% (11-of-16) from the free-throw line
* Centenary was 28.0% (14-of-50) from the field and 40.7% (11-of-27) from the charity stripe
* Grambling State tallied 46 rebounds, with 25 off the defensive glass
* Centenary registered 41 rebounds, including 26 of those from the defensive end
* Grambling State finished with 32 bench points, 58 points in the paint, 47 points off turnovers, and 11 second-chance points
* Centenary registered 20 points in the paint, five points off turnovers, 15 second-chance points and 21 bench points
