GSU tops Presbyterian, falls to UMKC

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Grambling State University softball team concluded the Black and Gold Spring Tournament on Saturday by going 1-1 at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
 
Grambling State (8-2) began the day with a thrilling, 2-1, win over Presbyterian College in eight innings, but ended the weekend with a 7-0 loss to UMKC.
 
Game 1 vs. Presbyterian
After three scoreless innings, Presbyterian struck for one run to grab a 1-0 lead.
 
Grambling State rallied in the top of the seventh as Versace Hicks-Butler drew a walk and Kenyshae Beasley came into the game as a pinch runner. Aniya Randle moved Beasley to third on a sacrifice bunt. Tia Coleman followed with a base hit up the middle to plate Beasley, tying the game at 1.
 
In the eighth inning and the international tiebreaker rule in effect, Tyler Robinson was placed at second to begin the frame, but was lifted for pinch runner Cameron Ellis. Morgan Adams moved Ellis to third on a sacrifice bunt for the first out. Edwenia Foster flied out to right to plate Ellis, giving Grambling State a 2-1 lead.

> Grambling State finished with two runs on two hits, committed three errors and left two on base
> Tia Coleman and Andreana Reynolds each recorded one hit
> D'Maria Matthews (6-1) picked up the victory for the Lady Tigers in pitching all eight innings. She gave up one run on seven hits, fanned four and walked three
> Presbyterian finished with one run on seven hits and stranded 12 baserunners
 
Game 2 vs. UMKC
The Roos (11-2) scored four runs in the second, two in the sixth and one in the seventh for the 7-0 victory.
 
Inside the Numbers
> Grambling State was held without a hit for the first time this season and stranded one baserunner
> Ja'Lynn Bonner started in the circle and pitched 1.1 innings. She gave up three runs on four hits
> Kenyshae Beasley surrendered four runs on five hits, walked seven and fanned two in 5.2 innings
> UMKC finished with seven runs on nine hits, with two errors and left six on base
