GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University offense overcame a 19-point halftime deficit to complete the comeback with a 49-44 victory in the annual Black and Gold Spring Football Game on Friday afternoon at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium.
"Offensively it was good to see us move the football," Grambling State head coach
Broderick Fobbs said. "Our running backs had a great day and I thought we had some good quarterback play as well. The offensive line really helped put together multiple long scoring drives. On the defensive side, our defensive backs were very active with a bunch of pass breakups and (Anfernee) Mullins was extremely active on the defensive line."
Kevin Dominque,
Keilon Elder and Jakarie Nichols dominated the defense with 273 rushing yards, 169 coming in the final two 12-minute periods and four touchdowns. Dominique led the way with two touchdowns, while Elder and Nichols each registered one. Each running back had at least one run of 20-yard or more, the longest coming from Nichols on a 58-yard score that gave the Gold team (offense) the 49-44 lead with just under three minutes to play.
Meanwhile through the air,
Charles Wright threw two touchdowns to
Devante Davis (16 yards) and
Quintin Guice (70 yards).
John-Paul Pierce tossed a 39-yard touchdown pass to
Kobe' Ross in the third quarter.
Defensively,
Brandon Wiggs recorded a team-leading two sacks, while
Brendan Vaughn, an Oklahoma State transfer, added one sack. Anthony Boston,
Diante Bridgewater and
Kenan Fontenot registered one interception each, while
Cameron Richardson and
Anfernee Mullins each recovered a Gold fumble. Mullins not only recovered the fumble, but returned it for a score.
With the loss to
Marc Orozco to his upcoming graduation,
Garrett Urban and
Miguel Mendez have been in camp all spring and will take over the kicking duties in the fall. The due was perfect on field goal and point after attempts during the spring game.
Grambling State will officially end its spring season with a walk-through practice on Sunday, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
