Kailey Pena's goal in the 88th minute lifted the Grambling State University women's soccer team pass the University of Louisiana-Monroe as the Lady Tigers won their home opener on Friday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex.
"We gave up two goals early in the second half," Head Coach Justin Wagar said. "They kept fighting and didn't get discouraged. They battled back, and got two goals late. And that just shows character. ULM played very hard and I think they're gonna have a good season. So this is a big win for us. This is the first time we've beaten ULM in over seven years. We take on Arkansas on Wednesday and last year they made the NCAA Tournament, so this will be a tough game."
Grambling State (2-0-0) got on the board first as Pena registered her first goal of the season with a long distance shot assisted by Jordyn King and Zenaya Barnes in the 11th minute.
Louisiana-Monroe (0-1-0) scored two goals in a three minute span in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
The Lady Tigers got back in the fight as Laila Loring tied the game in the 66th minute with a goal assisted by Sarah Teubner. In the final two minutes, Pena scored off an assist by Teubner that sealed the victory.
