GSU drops first match in NW Springhill Suites Invitational

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Grambling State kicked off play in the Springhill Suites Invitational with a  3-0 sweep to Portland on Friday afternoon at the Pan American Center. 

The Pilots won in three sets, 25-11, 25-19, and 25-14.

Portland (5-2) out numbered the Lady Tigers in kills, 44-25, in the three sets. Additionally, Grambling State was appalled with 21 errors.  

Grambling State (1-5) was led on offense by Tamria Johnson with nine kills. Linzy Woods registered five, while Chasity Nicks registered four, respectively. Kabria Dames led on defense with 10 digs. Coming in behind her was Nicks with seven and Maurisa Harris with six. 

The Pilots had two players register double figure kills. The offense was led by Shayla Hoeft who had 13 kills and Jayde Harris who had 11. Liz Reich tallied nine. Carey Williams led on defense with eight digs, Naone Kassidy ha seven and Katie Barker got five of her own. 

"Sophomore Tamaira Johnson had a great game today against Portland," said head coach Demetria Johnson. "Offensively she found ways to score and defensively she blocked well and put us in a position to do something positive with the balls she touched. We will continue to strive for discipline and the drive to fight and finish the game on a good note with a victory!"

> Grambling State finished with 25 kills, 21 errors, 84 attacks.
> Portland had 44 kills, 12 errors, 97 attacks.
> The Lady Tigers recorded 32 digs, 24 assists and one service aces
> The Pilots registered 36 digs, 40 assists and seven service aces
