Two Grambling State University Soccer players were honored by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) as Players of the Week. The two standout performances that were recognized came from red-shirt freshman defender, Stevie Maddox, her second honor of the year, and from red-shirt freshman goalkeeper, Rachel Pugh.
Maddox selected as the Co-defensive player of the week helped hold two top 125 ranked opponents to one goal per game average and then played a key part in earning a tie against local rival Louisiana Tech by scoring a 55-yard set piece goal from near mid-field as she drove a ball that grazed off the Tech goalkeepers hands and into the net to tie the game. In the second match-up of the week Maddox helped limit a University of North Texas team that was receiving votes in the top 25 national rankings last week to just one goal for the game.
Rachel Pugh was stellar in goal. The R-freshman transfer saved five of the six shots she faced against Louisiana Tech conceding a goal only on a penalty kick. And then against UNT Pugh posted some great saves notching 10 stops out of the 11 shots on goal she faced in Denton.
GSU heads into their final non-conference games of the season this weekend as they head to Texas for a two game road trip to take on UTRGV and the University of Texas. Both games will be broadcast online on their respective conference websites. After the road trip GSU will be back in action at home to kick-off a double header to start conference play.
