First half surge propels Grambling over Alabama A&M

Smith, Jr. nears triple-double in 10-point victory

Box Score GRAMBLING, La. | The Tigers came out the gate and wasted no time exerting their dominance in the first Southwestern Athletic Conference game of the year with a 70-60 victory over Alabama A&M at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

Ivy Smith, Jr. led the way for Grambling with a near triple-double, scoring 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dishing out eight assists in the victory (all game highs). Fellow Tiger DeVante Jackson finished with 13 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field and also grabbed six boards and had one block.

The Tigers (7-7, 1-0 SWAC) led the entire game after Jackson scored the opening bucket. Grambling held a 12-point lead at the break and cruised on to for the double-digit win, putting them tied atop of the SWAC standings after one game.

Prince Moss and Cameron Christian both scored 9 points apiece off the bench to help seal the deal in the second half as Grambling's bench scored a total of 30 points.

The Bulldogs were led by EJ Williams who finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebound while teammate Garrett Hicks chipped in with 13 points and three boards.

Inside the Numbers
> Grambling State shot 46 percent (28-of-61) from the floor and 44 percent (7-of-16) from the charity stripe
> Alabama A&M was 21-of-61 (34 percent) from the field and 15-of-26 (58 percent) from the foul line
> GSU registered 46 rebounds, including 36 on the defensive glass
> Alabama A&M pulled down 39 rebounds, with 29 coming on the defensive end
> The Tigers finished with 26 points in the paint, 30 bench points, nine second-chance points and 12 fast break points
> The Bulldogs recorded 30 points in the paint, 25 bench points, 13 second-chance points and nine fast break points

Grambling State continues conference play on Monday, January 6 as it plays host to Alabama State. Tip-off against the Hornets is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center in the second of two games of the SWAC doubleheader. The women's game will precede the men's contest.
