Alexus Holt led in double figures as the Lady Tigers earned their first victory in a 66-42 decision on Thursday night against the University of Louisiana at Monroe at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
A 29-0 run capped by a Brandí Washington free-throw with 4:45 in the third highlighted the victory.
The Lady Tigers (1-2) led, 16-13 at the end of the first quarter. The game got as close as a 23-point tie with 3:24 in the second, but ULM was outscored, 20-10 in that period, trailing 36-23 going into the break.
Grambling State kept the Lady Wahawks scoreless for 10 minutes in between the second and third periods.
In the third, GSU outscored the Lady Warhawks 24-7. Donalyn Johnson got a steal with two seconds left, found Williams as she nailed a half-court bucket at the buzzer to seal the period.
Williams led Grambling State with 13 points, on 5-of-8 shooting, along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals in 30 minutes of action. Alexus Holt registered 12 points, recorded five boards, three assists and four steals.
Kierra Brimzy paced ULM (1-2) with 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Whitney Goins contributed 11 points, four rebounds and one assist, while recorded
"Great win tonight; much needed win," said head coach Freddie Murray. "When you go through what we've gone through in the last two days to try to get on the court, it's just gratifying to know that all your hard work paid off. The ladies came out and played a great game and this will be a building block as we move forward and get ready for UAB on Sunday."
