Tigers fall to #17 Red Raiders 80-41 in Texas

Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas | Despite a solid first-half effort on the defensive end from the Tigers against the NCAA's 17th ranked team, Texas Tech University pushed through in the second half for an 80-41 victory over the Grambling Tigers at the United Supermarkets Arena. Turnovers were the difference in the contest as Grambling committed 30 turnovers to just 13 for the Red Raiders.

With just over three minutes remaining in the opening half, Grambling (1-3) trailed by just five points after a free throw from senior point guard Trevell Cunningham, but the Red Raiders responded with 11-2 run to close the half.

Redshirt junior Cameron Christon led Grambling with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field to go along with six boards (both team highs). The Texas native was the lone Tiger in double figures. Redshirt sophomore Dwayne Walker added nine points and four rebounds while Cunningham chipped in with seven points and four boards but had five turnovers.

Kyler Edwards finished with a game-high 13 points for Texas Tech (4-1).

 

Inside the Numbers

> Grambling State was 13-of-37 (35 percent) shooting and 12-of-20 (60 percent) from the charity stripe

> Texas Tech shot 42 percent (26-of-62) from the field and 52 percent (21-of-27 from the free-throw line)

> The Red Raiders registered 38 rebounds, including 15 on the offensive glass

> The Tigers pulled down 30 rebounds, with 25 coming on the defensive end

> GSU finished with 20 bench points, 14 points in the paint, 13 points off turnovers, seven second-chance points and five fast break points

>TTU tallied 28 points in the paint, 30 points off turnovers, 36 bench points, 10 second-chance points and eight fast break points

The Tigers stay on the road as they continue non-conference action in Monroe, La. to face the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Wednesday, December 16. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
