Box Score 4 HAMMOND, La. | The Grambling State University softball team participated in the Lion Classic on the campus of Southeastern Louisiana University. The team totaled four games in two days on their opening weekend for the 2020 season.
Here's how Saturday and Sunday's action panned out:
Game 1
Alabama State 10
Grambling 3
The Lady Tigers (0-1) scored three runs in the second inning and trailed 6-3 for the majority of the afternoon before giving up four runs in the sixth inning.
Anaiyah Fultz,
Andreana Reynolds and Anitya Randle all scored runs for the Lady Tigers in the season opener. Starting pitcher
D'Maria Matthews (0-1) pitched a total of 1.2 innings, giving up four runs and three hits for Grambling. Relief pitcher
Payton Shells then entered the game, giving up six hits and six runs in 4.1 innings of play.
Defensively, Anitya Randle led Grambling with six putouts.
Alabama State was led by Alexis Massie who finished with three runs in the win.

The Lady Tigers (0-2) led 3-2 after
A'yanna Williams hit an RBI-single that brought in
Anaiyah Fultz. Grambling starting pitcher
Ja'Lynn Bonner held down the fort through five innings and produced a season-high nine strikeouts and gave up four hits and four runs.
The Lady Tigers added another three runs in the fifth inning as Fultz, Anita Randle, Williams all scored. In the bottom stanza, Bonner gave up two additional runs, bringing the score to 6-4 in favor of Grambling.
Grambling was outscored 4-1 in the final two innings, giving up three in the final inning. Williams led Grambling with a game-high three hits while
Morgan Adams produced a team-high two RBI in the loss.
Defensively, Miller was marvelous and finished with a team-high nine put outs.
Buffalo was led by Olivia Kincannon who finished with a team-high three hits and a game-high 11 put outs.
Game 3

The Lady Tigers (0-3) managed just two hits on the afternoon but produced the first home run of the season as Miller connected on a solo shot in the fourth inning. Starting pitcher
Taylor Polk gave up seven hits, five runs and finished with one strike out in the loss.
UT Martin was led by Kallie Pickens who finished with two hits, two runs and three RBI in the win.
Game 4
Southeastern 10
Grambling 2
In the final game of the Lion Classic, the Lady Tigers (0-4) finished with two runs on four hits against the host team, who were named winners of the tournament.
Cameron Ellis produced a team-high two runs in the loss while
Ja'Lynn Bonner gave up a total of seven hits and five earned runs in the loss.
Southeastern was led by Briahna Bennett who finished with three hits in the win.

The Lady Tigers continue non-conference play on Wednesday, February 12 as they travel to Monroe to face the University of Louisiana at Monroe. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
