Three pace GSU in Boost Mobile HBCU Challenge victory

PHOENIX, Ariz. | Three Grambling State University men's basketball players scored in double figures as the Tigers cruised to a 74-59 victory to open play in the Boost Mobile Challenge, hosted by Chris Paul, on Sunday night at the Footprint Center.

Grambling State (2-4) led 44-24 at the break and never look back in picking up its second victory of the season.

Cameron Christon led the way for the Tigers with 24 points, on 8-of-10 shooting, along with four rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Danya Kingsby added 20 points, three rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists, while AJ Taylor just missed on a double-double, registering 16 points and nine boards, along with two blocked shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State opened the game trailing Morgan State (2-5) but quickly located their momentum and tying the game at 16
- The Tigers went on a 14-4 run to grab a 30-20 advantage after a 3-pointer by Cameron Christon with 3:44 remaining in the opening half
- An AJ Taylor fastbreak layup gave GSU a 35-20 lead with 2:40 left 
- Grambling State pushed the margin to 20 (44-24) as Danya Kingsby scored on a layup right before intermission
- The Tigers shot 7-of-13 (54 percent) from the 3-point line in the first half
- A 3-pointer by Kingsby nearly five minutes into the second half gave the Tigers a 54-33 lead
- The Bears closed the gap to 56-40 after a layup by Chad Venning with 12:25 left
- However, Grambling State used a small 8-2 run over the next four minutes, capped by a Cameron Christon layup, giving the Tigers a commanding 64-42 advantage with just under nine minutes remaining
- Morgan State never recovered from the huge deficit as Grambling State earned its second victory of the season

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State shot 50 percent (28-of-56) from the floor and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the free-throw line 
-Cameron Christon registered 24 points and four rebounds
-Danya Kingsby added 20 points, three rebounds and two assists
-AJ Taylor recorded 16 points and nine rebounds 
- The Tigers finished with 30 points in the paint, 22 points off 20 Morgan State turnovers, 18 fastbreak points, eight second-chance points and two bench points
- Morgan State went 21-of-61 shooting (34.4 percent) shooting from the field and 13-of-25 (52 percent) from the charity stripe
- Malik Miller paced the Bears with 10 points and 12 rebounds
- Keith McGee and De'Torrion each tallied eight points and six rebounds together
- The Bears finished with 32 points in the paint, 24 bench points, 13 second-chance points, eight points off 17 Grambling State turnovers and four fastbreak points

UP NEXT
Grambling State will return to the Footprint Center for Day 2 of the Boost Mobile HBCU Challenge hosted by Chris Paul. The Tigers will tip off against Norfolk State at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
