NATCHITOCHES, La. | This week the Grambling State University softball team returned to the diamond for the first time since March 8, 2020, before a national pandemic cut its season short. The Tigers traveled to Natchitoches to face instate neighbors Northwestern State University for a doubleheader.
Here's how the action panned out:
Game 1
Northwestern State 10 Grambling 0
Redshirt junior
Ja'Lynn Bonner got the start and gave up six hits and four earned runs in a tough three innings as the Tigers (0-1) got behind early. The Demons managed three runs in the second inning, then poured on six more runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead. Freshman
Sherrell Matthews came in relief for Grambling and allowed four hits and five earned runs in the loss.
Redshirt freshman
India Wells led the team with two hits on the afternoon.
Northwestern State's Bronte Rhoden was credited with the win as she fanned six GSU batters in five innings.
Game 2
Northwestern State 9 Grambling 1
Payton Shells (0-1) got the nod in the latter game and struck out two Demon batters in three innings of action, but gave up 10 hits and seven runs in her first start of the season.

GSU returns to the diamond on Saturday, February 27 when the team faces Tennessee State University at 11 a.m. in the 2021 River City Classic in Vicksburg, Miss., followed by another game at 3:30 p.m. against Miles College.
