GSU soccer loses heartbreaker in final 30 seconds of double OT in SWAC opener

Preseason All-SWAC junior forward Pena scores two goals in home opener

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State Tigers and the Prairie View Lady Panthers battled in a heated Southwestern Athletic Conference match that went nearly as far as it could possibly go before Prairie View scored the game-winner in the 110th minute of action with 30 seconds remaining before the final whistle (3-2, 2 OT).

Prairie View took an early lead after a seventh minute goal from striker Jaden Morgan. However, the Tigers weathered the storm with a goal from Preseason All-SWAC selection, junior Kailey Pena (PK, 19th min.) as she brilliantly made a move on the opposing goalkeeper, Quinn Josiah. Pena cut back inside the penalty box on a 1-v-1 opportunity and Josiah was forced to trip Pena, which resulted in both a yellow card for Josiah and a penalty kick for the Tigers.

The second half began with the match still tied 1-1 until GSU (0-2 overall, 0-1 SWAC) forward Pena found the back of the net for the go-ahead goal in the 48th minute off an assist from junior forward and Florida International transfer Kaydeen Jack.

The Lady Panthers answered back with a late equalizer in the 77th minute when Kaila Brown scored a goal to give life to Prairie View.

The match would head to extra time (overtime) which consisted of two 10-minute haves in a golden goal sudden death format, which meant the contest ended once either team scored a goal.

In the waning moments of the contest with the scored tied 2-2, Prairie View ended the match in dramatic fashion (110th min.) as D'Sanye Nugent scored the golden goal.

As a team the Tigers produced 15 shots (six on target) and generated a game-high five saves. Pena led her side with five total shots while both goalkeepers (Britt Verhees and Rachel Pugh) both managed four saves apiece for Grambling, with Verhees making three of her saves in overtime.
