BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The number four seed Grambling Tigers fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 27-25) to the number five seed Southern Jaguars in the first round of the 2021 Southwestern Athletic Conference Spring Volleyball Tournament at the Birmingham Crossplex. The loss knocked GSU out of the three day tourney.
In the opening set, the Tigers produced more kills (13) than Southern (12), but erased nearly all the points with 11 hitting errors compared to just two for the Jags.
Second-team All-SWAC selection
Gillian Jones led GSU with a team-high 10 kills and also added three block assists and two digs while teammate
Kalee Cadwell generated a team-high 16 assists and also added 10 digs in the loss.
Semira Fields and
Linzy Woods both added six kills apiece as Grambling fought furiously in the final set, pushing Southern to the limit before falling 27-25.
First-team All-SWAC selection and SWAC Libero of the Year
Jada Taylor tied a game-high with 13 digs for Grambling, who split the regular season series 1-1 with the Jaguars.
Tamaira Johnson stepped up on the defensive end and generated six block assists, good for a team-high.
Maurisa Harris chipped in with a team-high two service aces and led the team with 14 on the season.
Imani Litz led the Jags as she produced a game-high 14 kills.
Grambling finishes the season 8-9 overall.
