Tigers drop game 1 to Alabama State in Montgomery

The Tigers look to bounce back tomorrow for game 2 at 6 p.m.

Grambling, La | Grambling baseball was unable to steal game one on the road as Alabama State took the 16-6 win on Friday at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. The Tigers (11-16, 8-5 SWAC) trailed the entire game while the Hornets (14-17, 9-7 SWAC) plated three runs in the first inning and never looked back to secure the win.

Grambling defeated Texas Southern 5-4 in game one of the weekend series at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.

Graduate student Jahmoi percival got things started in the first with a homerun to right field to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead, but the Hornets answered with three runs in the first and never looked back. Grambling State plated one run in the third and attempted to rally back in the sixth inning. Redshirt junior Jordyn Smith singled up the middle for the first hit in the sixth inning. Following a walk, redshirt junior Jeremy Almaguer singled to right field to put runners on second and third. Caleb Clines hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run in the sixth. Redshirt sophomore Gerald Nervis Jr. subbed in to pinch hit for redshirt freshman Ben Avila which resulted in a walk to make the bases loaded. Graduate student Joseph Gunn scored on a wild pitch to plate the second run for the Tigers in the sixth. Cameron Phelts walloped a double to center field to score two more runs to cut the deficit. Alabama State put up another four-spot in the seventh to seal the game 16-6.

Jordyn Smith at bat vs TXSU

Quote from Coach Cooper
"As a unit we didn't get it done at the plate today. We missed too many fastballs. We have to be better at the plate tomorrow to have more competitive at bats. Pitching wise, our starting pitcher didn't have best game today and it showed. We missed over the plate too much and had too many walks. The result of the game tonight is what happens when you play good teams and they capitalize on your tardiness at the plate and mistakes made by your pitcher."
