HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Grambling State University volleyball team showed to tiredness from its five-set match against Alabama A&M late Sunday night as the Lady Tigers concluded play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Round-up with a 3-0 sweep of Mississippi Valley State on Monday morning at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
Grambling State (9-8 overall, 6-1 SWAC), which needed just an hour and five minutes to complete the match, dominated the opening set, hitting .219, with 10 kills in a 25-10 victory. The Lady Tigers took the second set, 25-17, and finished off SWAC Round-up play with a 25-2 victory in the third set.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
First SetÂ
- Grambling State raced out to a 9-1 advantage, forcing Mississippi Valley State to call a timeout
- The Lady Tigers continued to dominate the Devilettes, extending the lead to 13-1
- Mississippi Valley State (1-14, 0-6) was able to get as close as 10 points (14-4)
- However, GSU proved to be too much in taking the opening set, 25-10
Second SetÂ
- The Lady Tigers began the set with a 5-1 advantage and extended the lead to 9-3
- Mississippi Valley State closed the gap to 9-4
- Grambling State pulled away with a 7-0 run, pushing the margin to 16-4
- The Devilettes continued to battle back, cutting the deficit to 19-14
- A kill by Jayden James sparked Grambling State down the stretch as the Lady Tigers picked up a 25-17 win
Third SetÂ
- Grambling State opened the set on a 9-0 run
- The Lady Tigers continued their dominance by extending the advantage to 22-1
- MVSU could not rally as GSU completed the three-game sweep, 25-2
INSIDE THE NUMBERSÂ
- Grambling State finished with 32 kills in 80 total attacks, with just nine errors (hitting .400)
- The Lady Tigers registered 44 digs, 30 assists, 10 service aces and one total block
- Jayden James led the offense with eight kills, along with five digs
- Ana Calderon posted 13 assists
- Destiny Thomas paced the defense with nine digs
- Mississippi Valley State finished with 14 kills in 85 total attacks, with 24 errors
- The Devilettes recorded 36 digs, 12 assists, three total blocks and one service ace
- Chardea Berthelot and Chariah Mabry each recorded four kills
- Mikayla Lee tallied 10 assists and a team-high 10 digs

Grambling State takes a break from competition and will resume play on Sunday, Oct. 23Â at home versus Alcorn State for Alumni Day. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m. from the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
