SAN DIEGO, Calif. | The Grambling State University women's basketball team suffered a 66-41 defeat at the hands of San Diego State on Tuesday night at Viejas Arena.
Colbi Maples led the Lady Tigers offensively, scoring nine points and a rebound. Miracle Saxon and Leah Morrow scored eight points apiece. Saxon added eight rebounds to her tally, while Morrow snagged four boards, dished out three assists and a steal.
Four San Diego State players finished in double-figures with Sophia Ramos pacing the Aztecs with a game-high 16 points. Kim Villalobos notched an 11-rebound, 10-point double-double for SDSU.
Grambling State (1-4) started the game on fire, shooting 60 percent (6-of-10) from the floor in the opening quarter. However, the Lady Tigers turned the ball over eight times and found themselves trailing 15-14 heading into the second period.
San Diego State (5-1) opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run, opening up a 21-14 advantage before a three-pointer by Leah Morrow pulled the Lady Tigers back within four points, 21-17. GSU could only muster two more buckets in the first half, carrying a 34-23 deficit into halftime.
The Aztecs created distance between themselves and the Lady Tigers in the second half, ballooning its lead to 27 points, 65-38, with 1:57 to play to go in the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State shot 28.8 percent (17-of-59) from the field and 17.4 percent (4-of-23) from the three-point line. The Lady Tigers went 3-of-4 (75.0 percent) from the charity stripe.
- San Diego State was 25-of-50 from the floor (50.0 percent), shooting 40.0 percent (4-of-10) from three-point range. The Aztecs went 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the free throw line
- GSU held a 35-34 rebounding advantage
- SDSU dominated the paint, outscoring GSU 36-18
- Grambling State scored nine points off turnovers. San Diego State scored 11.
- SDSU's bench added 10 points. GSU's contributed nine.
