HOUSTON, Texas | The Grambling State University volleyball team suffered a setback on Monday night, falling 3-2 to Texas Southern in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match at the HPER Arena.
Texas Southern (7-18 overall, 7-7 SWAC) took the opening set, 25-18, but Grambling State (14-11, 11-4) responded with back-to-back set victories, 25-19 and 25-17. However, TSU forced the fifth set with a 25-19 win and won the match, 15-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
- Texas Southern raced out to a 7-3 lead and took a 10-5 advantage after an attacking error by GSU
- TSU extended the margin to 17-7
- Grambling State could not recover from the big deficit in a 25-18 win
Second Set
- Grambling State trailed 10-9, but used a 5-1 run, capped by a kill by Destiny Thomas to take a 15-11 advantage
- TSU closed the gap to 16-14, but GSU pulled away for the 25-19 victory
Third Set
- Texas Southern raced out to a 4-0 lead
- Grambling State recovered, tying the set at 8 after a kill by Jayden James
- The Lady Tigers grabbed a 21-13 advantage before taking the set, 25-17
Fourth Set
- TSU raced out to a 7-4 lead and extended the margin to 11-5 after a kill by Janiya Chapman
- Texas Southern continued to push the lead, taking a 19-10 advantage after a kill by Thalia Cordero-Moreno
- GSU cut the deficit to 21-16 after a kill by James, but TSU forced the final set, 25-19
Fifth Set
- The two teams battled back-and-forth
- With the score tied at 9, Texas Southern used a 7-0 run to take the match, 15-9
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State finished with 51 kills in 187 total attacks, with 23 errors
- The Lady Tigers recorded 81 digs, 42 assists, eight block solos, seven service aces and four block assists
- Jayden James registered a double-double of 24 digs and 15 kills
- Kai Williams added 11 kills and seven digs
- Ana Calderon dished out 21 assists and seven digs
- Hillary English handed out 16 assists, along with nine digs
- Zyonn Smith recorded 15 digs, while Bruna Torres added 11
- Texas Southern finished with 50 kills in 188 total attacks, with 30 errors
- TSU registered 87 digs, 40 assists, seven service aces and six blocks
- Amber Johnson and Caitlyn Roland each recorded 10 kills
- Dallas Balanay-Flores tallied a double-double of 25 assists and 11 digs
- Aaliyah Fields dished out 11 assists, with 12 digs
- Kaitlyn Scroggins finished with a team-high 20 digs

Grambling State concludes the regular season with Senior Day on Thursday as Arkansas-Pine Bluff visits the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
