McLaurin Scores Career-High 18 Points, Lady Tigers Fall at MSU

STARKVILLE, Miss. | Jurnee McLaurin had a career night for Grambling State University, scoring a career-best 18 points as the Lady Tigers fell to Mississippi State 73-47 at Humphrey Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. 

McLaruin went 6-for-12 from the field, grabbing five rebounds with two steals. 

Grambling State (1-8) utilized the three-ball to keep pace with Mississippi State in the opening period. The Lady Tiger connected on 4-of-8 from behind the arc. 

The Lady Tigers opened the scoring on a 3-pointer from Colbi Maples. Later in the quarter, she gave the Lady Tigers an 8-4 lead with at the 5:33 mark, when she connected on her second three of the game. 

Maples was GSU's second-leading scorer on the afternoon, contributing 16 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists. 

Jurnee McLaurin also knocked down a pair of shots from behind the arc in the first quarter. Her second shot made the score 16-14 in favor of MSU with 1:33 to go in the first. The Bulldogs scored closed the first quarter on a 6-0 run to grab a 22-14 lead 

GSU struggled to find consistency in the second quarter, shooting just 21.4 percent from the field (3-of-14). The Lady Tigers were held scoreless for the first 5:33 of the second period, while MSU built a 31-14 advantage. Maples ended the scoring drought with a layup with 4:27 left in the half. The Bulldogs led 44-21 going into the break. 

MSU (7-2) led by as many as 30 points in the 4th quarter, 70-40. Two Mississippi State players registered double-doubles. Jessika Carter scored 15 points with 14 boards, while Denae Carter posted a 13-point, 11 rebound outing. Debreasha Powe led the Bulldogs with a game-high 19 points.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State shot 27.4 percent from the field (17-of-62), including connecting on 33.3 percent (10-of-30) of its three-point attempts. The Lady Tigers went 3-of-7 ( 42.9 percent) at the free throw line.
  • Mississippi State hoisted 57 shots, sinking 22 (38.6 percent). The Bulldogs went 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) from three-point range and 25-of-34 (73.5 percent) on free throws.
  • MSU held a 48-41 rebounding advantage
  • The Bulldogs outscored GSU in the paint 34-12
  • Mississippi State scored 27 points off turnovers. Grambling State scored six
  • GSU's bench outscored MSU's 28-11
  • Amanda Blake snagged a career-high 11 rebounds

Grambling State returns to action action Dec. 15 when the Lady Tigers travel to Jonesboro, Ark. to take on Arkansas State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
