NEW ORLEANS, La. | Just one day after opening the season with a dominating victory over Jackson State, the Grambling State University baseball team fell to the University of New Orleans 12-2 in seven innings on Saturday afternoon.
Defensive woes doomed GSU (1-1) early, as the Tigers committed four of their five errors in the the opening inning.
As a team, the Tigers scattered five hits. UNO (2-0) picked up 10 hits.
GSU starting pitcher Connor Rudy (0-1) was saddled with the loss after eight runs, three earned, on four hits in 1.0 innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State looked like it would continue its hot hitting from the night before, when John Garcia hit a two-out double to right-centerfield in the top of the first. However a strikeout one batter later ended GSU scoring threat.
- The bottom of the first inning was anything but kind to the Tigers. UNO's Kasten Furr opened with a double. After Furr advanced to third on a throwing error, and error on the next at-bat plated the Privateers first run.
- New Orleans scored eight runs on four hits and four errors in the opening frame to go up 8-0.
- Trialing 10-0, the Tigers finally broke into the scoring column in the top of the sixth inning. Keylon Mack drew a walk, working his way to second base. Aries Gardner notched an RBI single in the following at-bat to cut the deficit to 10-1. The Privateers responded with another run in the bottom half of the inning.
- In the seventh inning, LeAndre Turner got on base after being hit by a pitch with one out. Turner worked his way to third base following a single from Trevor Hatton. Cameron Bufford drove him home on a ground ball to second base to, cutting the deficit to 11-2.
- UNO, however, scored another run in the bottom of the seventh to invoke the mercy rule and secure the 12-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State registered five hits while committing five errors.
- New Orleans tallied 10 hits, and committed one error.
- Dylan Porter (1-0) earned the win for UNO, going 4.0 innings, striking out seven batters while surrendering two hits, one walk and hitting one batter.
