NEW ORLEANS, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team got back on the winning track Sunday afternoon, defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 11-7 to wrap up play in the Andre Dawson Classic at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
The Tigers cranked out 11 hits, dealing most of their damage in the first two innings. John Garcia had another solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI. Trevor Hatton paced the Tigers in the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Terry Burrell III and Cameron Bufford also had multi-hit games for GSU, both going 2-for-4. Bufford knocked three runs home, while Burrell drove in one. Julian Murphy notched his first home run of the season, going 1-for-3 with tow RBI.
GSU starting pitcher Roy Peguero (1-0) put on a dominant performance on the mound, keeping the Golden Lions off balance for much of the afternoon. Peguero worked 6.0 innings, surrendering just one run on three hits and striking out four batters.
In stark contrast to Saturday's loss to New Orleans, the GSU (2-1) defense committed just one error on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State got the party going early in the first inning. Following a leadoff single by Hatton, Bufford drilled an RBI double to right field to give GSU a 1-0 lead. Bufford was thrown out at third base on the play.
- Later in the inning, Garcia smashed a double to centerfield. Garcia came around to score when Murphy singled to right field, stretching GSU's advantage to 2-0. Adrian Gardner smacked a two-run homer over the right field wall to put GSU up 4-0 heading into the bottom half of the frame.
- Leading 4-1 in the top of the second inning, Hatton picked up another hit in the leadoff spot and Bufford got hit by a pitch to put two Tigers on base with no outs. Garcia laced his second double of the contest to right field, driving Hatton around to score. Shemar Page notched an RBI on a ground ball to third base to give GSU a 6-1 lead.
- Grambling State added three more runs in the sixth inning, this time utilizing small ball and patience to put runners on base. Following a walk, Hatton and Burrell III reach bases on back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases. Nasir Frederick scored on a wild pitch and a two-RBI single form Bufford grew GSU's lead to 9-1.
- The Tigers score their final two runs of the day in the the seventh inning, building an 11-1 lead.
- UAPB closed the gap in the closing innings, but GSU kept the Golden Lions at bay to claim the victory
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State registered 11 hits while committing one error.
- Arkansas-Pine Bluff tallied 6 hits, committing no errors
- Jacob Ehling (0-1) picked up loss for UAPB, tossing 0.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits.
- GSU left eight runners on base. UAPB left four runners stranded.

Grambling State travels to Lawrenceville, Ga. for a three-game series versus Florida A&M in the Ralph Garr-Bill Lucas Classic, hosted by the Atlanta Braves. The series begins on Friday, Feb. 25 and concludes on Sunday, Feb. 27. First pitch on Friday is set for 7 p.m.
