Lady Tigers split day two doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Grambling State University softball team racked up another win defeating Florida A&M, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the HBCU Celebration Tournament. The Lady Tigers also dropped a 6-4 decision to Alabama A&M in the day two doubleheader.

GAME 1

-Florida A&M (1-11) got on the board first with an RBI single to right field from Destiny Cuevas that allowed Nyah Morgan to score

-Grambling State (7-3) couldn't seem to breakthrough until the top of the fifth inning when India Wells got on base with an RBI single scoring Kaylee Nettles

-The Lady Tigers struck again in the top of the seventh as Ja'Lynn Bonner scored a run off of a sacrifice fly from India Wells

-Deija Russell grounded out to second base, but not before Kaytlyn Moore came across the plate

-FAMU wasn't able to get past the Tigers defense in the bottom of the seventh as Grambling State got away with the 3-1 victory over the Rattlers

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Grambling State finished with three runs, seven hits and one error

-Florida A&M had one run and seven hits

-Sherrell Matthews (2-0) secured the win on the mound for the Lady Tigers allowing one run and striking out one batter

-Cris'Deona Beasley (1-6) took the loss for the Lady Rattlers recording eight strikeouts and allowing three runs

GAME 2

-Grambling (7-4) got off to a stellar start as its first four batters got on base

-Anaiyah Fultz laid down a bunt advancing all base runners and scoring India Wells

-Deija Russell scored GSU's second run off of an Alabama A&M error that allowed Antiya Randle to get on base

-Tytianna Robinson scored Nyah Jones on an RBI single to right field as the Lady Tigers closed out the bottom of the first with a 3-0 lead

-Alabama A&M (2-9) answered in the top of the third inning as Alyssa Lopez singled to center field scoring Da'Nijah Wade

-Rachel McKinney hit a homerun to open the top of the fourth inning for the Lady Bulldogs, making the score 3-2

-Serena Herbranson doubled to right center bringing in Allyson Riches to tie the score at three

-Alabama A&M took the lead, 4-3, in the top of the fifth after Grambling State committed a throwing error allowing Brooklyn Wallace to score

-Another GSU error allowed Da'Nijah Wade to reach first base and Imani Mathis to score in the top of the sixth inning

-The Lady Tigers responded in the bottom of the sixth as Kaytlyn Moore laid down a sacrifice bunt that let Antiya Randle score

-Alabama A&M scored again in the seventh to seal the 6-4 victory

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Grambling State finished with nine hits, four runs and four errors

-Alabama A&M finished with 10 hits, six runs and two errors

-Alyssa Lopez (1-2) got the win on the mound for the Lady Bulldogs listing two strikeouts, one error and only allowing one run

-Janecia King and Ja'Lynn Bonner pitched on the mound for GSU

-King (0-1) took the loss with one walk and allowed no runs

UP NEXT

The Lady Tigers will wrap up their run at the HBCU Celebration Tournament with another match-up with Florida A&M Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
