GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's basketball team earned a huge senior day victory, defeating Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent Florida A&M, 84-59 on Saturday afternoon at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Alexus Holt paced the Lady Tigers offensively, scoring 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including going 4-of-6 from behind the arc. She also snagged seven rebounds, six assists, three steals and one block.Â
Justice Coleman also had a big day, scoring 18 points and moving into seventh place on the all-time scoring list at GSU. Phylicia Allen turned in a 10-point performance to go along with two assists, two steals and one rebound.
Ariel Williams did most of her damage by feeding her teammates, notching a game-high seven assist with nine points.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a first quarter that saw FAMU finish with a 17-16 lead, GSU hit its stride in the second quarter.Â
- Alexus Holt put the Lady Tigers in front, 18-17, early in the second period with a layup.Â
- A trio of three pointers from Justice Coleman and Holt gave Grambling State its first double digit lead of the day, 29-17, with 7:44 to go in the first half. GSU led by as much as 13 points before halftime. A layup from Trasity Totten as time expired, gave GSU a 41-30 lead heading into the break.Â
- The Lady Tigers continued to turn up the pressure on Florida A&M in the third period, quickly building a 20 point lead, 52-32, with 5:52 to go. GSU opened the quarter on a 13-2 run.Â
- A bucket by Ariel Williams at the end of the third, gave GSU a 65-42 lead.
- Phylicia Allen drove the lane for a layup to give Grambling State its largest lead of the contest, 78-47, with 3:30 to play.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State shot 47.7 percent (31-of-65) from the field and 66.7 percent (16-of-24) from the free-throw line Â
- The Lady Tigers finished with 43 points in the paint, 15 bench points, 11 second-chance points, nine fastbreak points and 37 points off 23 Florida A&M turnoversÂ
- Â FAMU shot 38.0 percent (19-of-50) from the field and 81.8 percent (18-of-22) from the charity stripeÂ
- Anisja Harris led the way for the Rattlers with 18Â points, three rebounds and one steals
- The Rattlers finished with 26 points in the paint, seven points off 11 Grambling State turnovers, five bench points, six fastbreak points and eight second-chance pointsÂ
