GRAMBLING, La. | Eric Parrish registered a double-double, with a. game-high 15 rebounds, along with 11 points as the Grambling State University men's basketball team got back into the win column with a 58-50 victory over Alabama A&M in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game on Monday night on the Willis Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Grambling State (10-13 overall, 8-3 SWAC) rallied from a four-point halftime deficit and took the lead for good with 10:40 remaining as the Tigers have won six out of their last seven games. GSU remains one-game back in the SWAC standings and share the second spot with Florida A&M, Texas Southern and Alcorn State.
Parrish poured in the double-double, along with three assists and one steal to lead the Tigers. Cameron Christon finished with 12 points, with five boards and two steals, while Shawndarius Cowart added 10 points, seven boards, three assists and three steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State grabbed a 14-9 advantage after a thunderous dunk by Prince Moss with just under 12 minutes left in the opening half
- Alabama A&M answered and took a 15-14 lead after a bucket by Jalen Johnson with 8:25 left
- Neither team could break free until the Bulldogs took a 29-24 advantage after a 3-pointer by Garrett Hicks with 1:01 remaining
- A pair of free throws by AJ Taylor cut the margin to 29-27, but Johnson sank a pair at the charity stripe to give Alabama A&M a 31-27 lead at the break
- The Tigers held the Bulldogs scoreless for nearly four minutes as Grambling State tied the game at 25 after a Shawndarius Cowart layup with 15:33 remaining
- Alabama A&M grabbed a 41-38 advantage after two free throws by Hicks with 11:57 left
- However, Grambling State went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes, taking a 48-41 lead after a Malik Lamin jumper
- The Bulldogs (5-16, 4-7) closed the gap to 51-50 after a Johnson layup with 4:17 remaining
- That would be as close as Alabama A&M would get as Grambling State ended the game on a 7-0 run
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Grambling State shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the field and 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the free-throw line
-The Tigers finished the night with 34 points in the paint, 16 bench points, 12 second-chance points, four fastbreak points and two points off 15 Alabama A&M turnovers
-Alabama A&M shot 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the field and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe
-Jalen Johnson led the way for the Bulldogs, scoring 20 points and seven rebounds
-Myles Parker recorded 10 points, three rebounds and one assist
-The Bulldogs registered 28 points in the paint, 10 second-chance points, five points off 13 Grambling State turnovers and two bench points
