Holt’s 27 Points Propels GSU to Victory over AAMU

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's basketball team notched its third consecutive victory, defeating Alabama A&M 81-72 on Monday night on the Willis Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

Alexis Holt recorded her second 20-point performance in a row, scorching AAMU for a game-high 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting. Holt also knocked down two three-pointers and snagged six rebounds with four assists and three steals. 

Justice Coleman racked up 16 points with three rebounds and two assists, while Ariel Williams also complimented the Lady Tigers' offensive attack with 15 points. Williams was active on defensive end as well, registering a game-high five steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After surrendering the opening bucket, Grambling State (10-12 overall, 7-4 SWAC) seized the lead, and held it for the majority of the first quarter. The Lady Tigers opened up a 10-point advantage, 21-11, on a Colbi Maples jumper with 1:01 to play in the frame.
  • GSU led Alabama A&M 23-14 heading into the second period.
  • With the Lady Tigers leading 25-18, Leah Morrow put GSU back up by double-digits after connecting on a three-pointer with 7:45 to go in the half, giving GSU a 28-18 lead. Back-to-back layups by Ariel Williams pushed the margin to 14. A bucket by Alexus Holt handed Grambling State its largest lead of the night,16, as GSU held a commanding 34-18 lead at the 6:51 mark. GSU carried a 46-36 lead into the break. 
  • It was in the fourth quarter that Alabama A&M (8-13, 6-5) would shift momentum their way. 
  • Trailing the Lady Tigers 67-57 with 8:02 to play, a layup by Jada Clowers sparked 14-2 run by the Lady Bulldogs, putting AAMU on to 71-69 with 4:57 left in the contest. 
  • GSU settled down and responded with a 10-0 run, kickstarted by a deep three by Williams to build a comfortable 10-point lead with 1:04 to go. Holt sealed her stellar night with a layup to cap the run with the Lady Tigers on top 81-71.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State shot 56.0 percent (28-of-50) from the floor and 74.1 percent (20-of-27) from from the free-throw line. The Lady Tigers also connected on 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from three-point range 
  • GSU finished with 34 points in the paint, 23 points off 19 AAMU turnovers, 13 bench points, 10 fast break points and 12 second-chance points
  • Alabama A&M finished with 48 points in the paint, 25 points off 24 GSU turnovers, 45 bench points, four fast break points and six second-chance points
  • Dariauna Lewis led AAMU with 24 points with six rebounds, two blocks, two assists and one steal

UP NEXT 
Grambling State travels to Houston, Texas to take on Texas Southern on Saturday, Feb 12. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at the H&PE Arena. The game will be broadcast on NBA TV.
