GSU Sweeps Midweek Doubleheader Versus Wiley

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team got back into the win column, sweeping Wiley College in a doubleheader at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park on Wednesday afternoon.

GSU (4-8) scrapped its way to a 4-0 victory in game one, before manhandling Wiley in the nightcap, 23-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE

  • Grambling State scored the first run of the game on an RBI bunt single in the third inning. 
  • In the fifth inning, Jarficur Parker singled to centerfield, plating another Tiger run, stretching the lead to 2-0.
  • GSU rounded out the scoring the sixth inning with a 2-RBI double to right field from LeAndre Turner

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • GSU totaled four hits
  • Wiley was held to one hit 
  • The Tigers stole five bases
  • LeAndre Turner went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI
  • Grambling State starting pitcher Roy Peguero worked 3.0 innings allowing no hit and no runs while striking out two and allowing three walks.
  • Connor Rudy (1-3) earned the victory in relief, surrendering no runs on one hit, and striking out four.
  • JC Bonilla tossed one inning in relief, fanning two batters

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO 

  • Wiley jumped out to early lead, plating three runs in the top of the first inning. 
  • The Wildcats extended their advantage to 4-0 in the third inning on an RBI single by Matthew Drabbant
  • Grambling State, however, scored 23 unanswered runs over the next three innings. After scoring three in the bottom of the third, the Tigers posted 10 runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. John Garcia's two-run home run that sailed high above the left field wall and just past the light poles, served as the highlight of the scoring onslaught.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Grambling State racked up a season-high 20 hits 
  • Terry Burrell III went 4-for-4 with an RBI
  • Cameron Bufford went 3-for-4 with two RBI
  • Johnson Garcia drove in four runs, going 2-for-3 with a two-run homer
  • GSU stole four bases
  • Santiago Hungria III earned his first win of the year in a relief appearance, working one full inning giving up no runs on one hit with two Ks
  • Corbin Peters got the start going one inning, allowing three runs, one earned, on one hit with three strikeouts
  • Emir Garrett, Garrett Riley, Esteban Tavares and Brett Washington all made relief appearances

UP NEXT 
Grambling State opens a three-game weekend home series versus Alabama State on Friday. First pitch for game one is set for 6 p.m. at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jone Park.
