Lady Tigers Earn Victories over BCU and MVSU

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Grambling State University women's tennis team wrapped up weekend play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Pod 2 on Sunday with its first two victories of the season, defeating Bethune-Cookman and Mississippi Valley State at Lagoon Park. 

The Lady Tigers opened weekend play with a 4-2 loss to Alcorn State, but rebounded on Sunday with a 5-2 win over Bethune-Cookman and a 7-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State. 

GRAMBLING STATE 5, BETHUNE-COOKMAN 2 
DOUBLES 
- Grambling State took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 
- The team of Georgina Kaindoah and Claire Machisa defeated Selene Kentish and Jourdon Cooper, 6-0 at No. 2 
- Takudzwa Mawisire and Itzel Hernandez won by default at No. 3, giving GSU the doubles point 

SINGLES 
- Grambling State picked up victories at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 
- Mikaila Coleman (No. 5) and Machisa (No.6) won by default 
- Lungile Ntuli defeated Diarra Thomas, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 
- Kaindoah blanked Cooper at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0 

GRAMBLING STATE 7, MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 0 
DOUBLES 
- Grambling State swept all three matches, with scores of 6-0, to claim the doubles point 

SINGLES 
- The Lady Tigers got wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 to seal the win, and completed the sweep with victories at No. 3 and No. 6 
- At No. 1, Brittney Combest defeated Toi Carter, 6-0, 6-0 
- Lungile Ntuli topped Jermyia Merritt, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 
- Takudzwa Mawisire blanked Toni Carter, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 
- At No. 4, Georgina Kaindoah knocked off Alexus Johnson, 6-0, 6-0 
- Mikaila Coleman bested Naterra Young, 6-0, 6-0 
- Claire Machisa defeated Takiyah Wahhab, 6-0, 6-0

Grambling State (2-11 overall, 2-4 SWAC) concludes play in the SWAC Pod 2 at Alabama State. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
