Lady Tigers Top Prairie View A&M in Conference Opener

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University softball team recorded its first conference victories defeating Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon at the GSU Softball Complex. The Lady Tigers won the series, 2-1, defeating the Panthers 4-3, 8-1, and dropping the Monday matchup, 6-1.

GAME 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Grambling State (12-8, 2-1 SWAC) started scoring in the bottom of the third inning as Deija Russell hit a two-run RBI to right field bringing Kaytlyn Moore and Kayla Robinson home

-Nyah Jones came to the plate next hitting a sacrifice fly to score India Wells

-Prairie View A&M (1-19, 1-2 SWAC) answered in the top of the fourth Jerrica Rojas singled to centerfield scoring Audrey Garcia as GSU clenched on to a 3-1 lead

-The Lady Panthers crept back into the game scoring another run as Aniya Spangler crushed a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning

-Prairie View tied the game at three with two outs as Makala Barnes crushed a double to right field

-Grambling State forced an error on the defense as Tytianna Robinson scored for 4-3 walk-off win

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Grambling State finished with eight hits, four runs and no errors

-Prairie View A&M finished with six hits, three runs and one error

-Sherrell Matthews recorded her fourth victory on the mound completing four strikeouts and allowing three runs in seven innings

-Cailin Massey took the loss for the Lady Panthers walking two batters and allowing four runs

GAME 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Grambling State got on the board first as Tytianna Robinson doubled to right field scoring Kaylee Nettles

-The Lady Tigers plated six runs in the bottom of the four innings as Anaiyah Fultz doubled to centerfield to score Antiya Randle and Kaylee Nettles to give GSU the 7-0 advantage

-The Lady Panthers scored their first run in the top of the sixth inning as Taliya Talley singled in the infield to score Brelyn Senegal

-Grambling State went on to score one more run as Fultz stole home on a passed ball to seal the game, 8-1

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Grambling State finished with 13 hits, eight runs and no errors

-Prairie View A&M finished with five hits, one run and two errors

-Dacia Richard got the win on the rubber striking out eight batters and only allowing one run in seventh inning

-Mya Hall took the loss for the Lady Panthers throwing three innings and walking five batters while allowing seven runs

GAME 3

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Prairie View A&M got on the board first as Biviana Figueroa doubled to right field scoring Aniya Spangler

-In the top of the fourth, Aniya Spangler singled to right field for a two-run RBI that allowed Maya Barnes and Makala Barnes to score as Prairie View remained on top, 5-0

-Morgan Adams doubled to center field to attempt to give the Lady Tigers life as Tytianna Robinson scored GSU's first run in the bottom of the fifth inning

-The Lady Tigers' attempt wasn't enough as GSU fell to Prairie View 6-1 in game three

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Grambling State finished with five hits, one run and three errors
-Prairie View A&M finished with nine hits, six runs and no errors

-Cailin Massey walked away with the victory for the Lady Panthers allowing only one run and striking out five batters in seven innings

-Ja'Lynn Bonner took the loss for the Lady Tigers allowing nine hits, six errors and walking one batter

UP NEXT

The Lady Tigers will travel to Baton Rouge to take on rival Southern University on Friday and Saturday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday.
