Grambling State Defeats Prairie View A&M, Improves to 2-0 in SWAC

GRAMBLING, La.  | The Grambling State University baseball team put on a dominant performance on Saturday afternoon, soundly defeating Prairie View A&M 10-1 at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E Jones Park.

GSU, who registered 13 hits, was led offensively by David Valoy Jr. Valoy turned in a 3-for-5 performance with two RBI. LaMarcus Jones, Cameron Bufford and Shemar Page all contributed two hits apiece.

Jacorey Boudreaux (1-2) earned his first victory of the season, racking up five strikeouts in six full innings of work. He surrendered one run on five hits with two walks.

Victor Mendoza (1-3) was saddled with the loss for PVAMU, giving up eight runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and three walks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • In the bottom of the second inning, a pair of RBI doubles from Trevor Hatton and LaMarcus Jones put Grambling State up 2-0.
  • The Tigers broke the game open in the third inning, plating six runs on six hits and one error. David Valoy Jr. opened the third inning onslaught with a two-RBI single through the right side of the infield. Jones followed with an RBI double to deep left centerfield to give GSU a 5-0 lead
  • Terry Burrell III then singled to shortstop, driving in another run. On the same play, a throwing error cost the Panthers another run, putting GSU on top 7-0. Jarficur Parker wrapped up the third inning scoring with an RBI single to left field. Grambling State led 8-0 heading into the fourth inning.
  • Leading 8-1 in the eighth inning, Shemar Page scorched an RBI single to left field, stretching GSU's lead to 9-1. John Garcia drove the Tigers' final run in with a sharply hit ball through the left side of the infield.

  • Grambling State registered 13 hits
  • Prairie View A&M tallied seven hits
  • GSU committed one error
  • PVAMU made four errors
  • Roy Peguero picked up his first save of the season, tossing three full innings, delivering two strikeouts while allowing two hits and two walks. 
  • Shemar Page is on a seven-game hitting streak
