Grambling State Falls to UAPB in Series Finale

GRAMBLING, La. | After dominating the first two games of its series versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff, The Grambling State University baseball team found itself on the wrong side of the scoreboard, falling 17-7 to the UAPB, in eight innings, on Sunday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park. 

GSU fell to 13-19 overall, 8-4 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The loss also snapped a five game conference winning streak for the Tigers. 

The Tigers erased a 6-1 deficit, tying the game 6-6 in the fifth inning. However, GSU could never pull ahead of the UAPB, being outscored 11-1 over the final three innings.

Keylon Mack was a bright spot for the Tigers, going 1-for-2 with a three-run home run. LaMarcus Jones and Trevor Hatton also showcased some power, hitting a pair of homers in the fourth inning. 

Connor Rudy (3-5) got the start for the GSU, earning a no decision after working 4.0 innings, surrendering five runs on 10 hits, with three strikeouts and one walk. Emir Garrett (0-1) was charge with loss in relief, allowing six runs on four hits. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff (7-19-1 overall, 4-8 SWAC) put the pressure on Grambling State early. The Golden Lions built a 5-0 lead through three and half innings. 
  • GSU began to claw its way back into the contest with a pair of home runs in the bottom of the fourth. LaMarcus jones cranked a solo homer to left field, putting GSU on the scoreboard. Trevor Hatton followed with two-run shot, cutting UAPB's lead to 5-3 at the end of four.
  • After the Golden Lions put up another run in the top of the fifth inning, Keylon Mack cracked a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game at 6-6.
  • Arkansas-Pine bluff broke the game open in the sixth inning, plating eight runs. The Golden Lions hit three home runs in the frame. 
  • Grambling State's final run of the day came via a balk in the bottom of the sixth inning. UAPB closed the scoring with the three-run homer in the eight inning,

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State scored seven runs runs on nine hits, committing three errors, and leaving eight runners on base
  • Arkansas-Pine bluff plated 17 runs on 18 hits, while making one error on defense. The Golden Lions stranded 10 runners
  • GSU hit three home runs
  • UAPB registered four homers
  • LaMarcus jones went 2-for-4 with a solo home run
  • Trevor Hatton went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer
  • In addition to Emir Garrett, Malik Abdul, Corben Peters and Michael Mims III also made relief appearances for GSU
  • Brandon Little (1-1) earned the win in the relief for UAPB, allowing one run on one hit, with four strikeouts and three walks in 3.2 innings of work. 

UP NEXT
Grambling State travels to Houston, Texas to begin a three-game SWAC series at Texas Southern. The series begins at MacGregor Park on Thursday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
