GRAMBLING, La.| The Grambling State University softball team defeated Southern University in its Saturday doubleheader to complete the series sweep in the weekend's Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) matchup.
The Lady Tigers honored four seniors ahead of the first game of the day for their accomplishments and contributions to Grambling State University and the softball program; Ja'Lynn Bonner, Taylor Polk, Kaylee Nettles, and Asli Strozier
GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Southern University (10-30, 8-12 SWAC) got on the board first as Lauren Parks scored the Jaguars' first run in the top of the first inning
-Grambling State's (20-17, 7-10 SWAC) immediate response in the bottom of the first allowed the Lady Tigers to take the lead, 2-1, as Deija Russell tripled to right field to score Ta'Mya Johnson and Antiya Randle
-The Lady Tigers continued to push the gas scoring three more runs in the bottom of the second and taking a 5-1 lead of Southern
-Faith McQueary singled to right field at the bottom of the fifth driving in Deija Russell
-The Lady Tigers held Southern to its one run, walking away with the 6-1 victory
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Grambling State finished with four hits, six runs and two errors
-Southern finished with two hits, one run and five errors
-Sherrell Matthews (5-3) secured the victory on the rubber for GSU while only allowing one run in seven innings
-Julia York (4-9) recorded the loss for Southern allowing four runs, three errors and walking two batters

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Southern University (10-31, 8-13 SWAC) jumped ahead first in the top of the second inning Alissa Castaneda doubled to left field scoring Christina Mayer
-Grambling State (21-17, 8-10 SWAC) tied it at one as Deija Russell hit a triple down the right field line that scored Antiya Randle
-The Jaguars took a 2-1 lead as Julia York singled to right field scoring Roxanna Segura in the top of the third
-Southern scored another run in the top of the fourth as Mariyah Sandoval scored on Alissa Castaneda's groundout to the pitcher
-Ta'Mya Johnson came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning and singled to center field scoring Asli Strozier
-The Lady Tigers rallied with two outs and tied the game at three in the bottom of the sixth as Tytianna Robinson doubled to right field bringing Kayla Robinson home
-Dazzlyn Woodard came to the plate next and singled to center field to score Robinson as Grambling State took the 4-3 lead
-The Lady Tigers held Southern on defense to secure the 4-3 victory to complete the series sweep
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Grambling State finished with eight hits, four runs and two errors
-Southern finished with nine hits, three runs and no errors
-Payton Shells secured the victory for GSU holding SU to no runs in three innings and striking out two batters
-Dacia Richard opened the game for Grambling State throwing three innings and striking out three batters
-Raquel Latta took the loss for Southern

The Lady Tigers travel down the road to the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Tuesday for a final non-conference matchup. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
