GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team used a late grand slam to erase a 4-1 deficit, but couldn't hold off Southern University, suffering a 7-6 setback in 10 innings at R.W.E Jones Park at Wilbert Ellis Field, on Friday night.
GSU starting pitcher Shemar Page struck out 11 batters in 6.0 innings of work, allowing four runs on nine hits and four walks.
After being held scoreless through the first six innings, and trailing 4-0 entering the seventh, GSU plated five runs, most of which came on a grand slam by Trevor Hatton. For the game, Grambling State scored six runs on seven hits.
Connor Rudy (3-7) was charged with the loss in relief, surrendering two runs on two hits, to go along with two strikeouts in one full inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Southern got off to a hot start, grabbing a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a three-run home run by O'neill Burgos. The Jaguars stretched its lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth.
- After being largely silent for the first six innings, the Grambling State bats woke up in the seventh inning. Cameron Bufford and Keylon Mack opened the Tigers' half of the inning with back-to-back base hits. Aries Gardner then reached on a fielder's choice with Bufford scoring and Mack advancing to third base on a throwing error from the first baseman.
- Pinch-hitter LaMarcus Jones loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch. Trevor Hatton pushed GSU into the lead with a grand slam to deep centerfield, handing the Tigers their first lead of the game at 5-4.
- SU tied the game 5-5 with a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning.
- The Jaguars grabbed a 7-5 lead on a two-run homer by Hunter Tabb in the 10th inning.
- Jarficur Parker pulled the Tigers within one run in the bottom of the inning a with a solo homer to left field. GSU couldn't recapture the lead, falling 7-6 in extras.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State scored six runs runs on seven hits, committing one error, and leaving five runners on base
- Southern plated seven runs on 14 hits, while making two errors on defense. The Jaguars stranded 16 runners
- Shemar Page became the first Grambling State pitcher to notch 100 strikeouts in a season since 1994. Page now has 109 Ks on the year
- Jarficur Parker went 2-for-5 with a home run
- Trevor Hatton went 1-for-5 with a grand slam
- Enrique Ozoa (3-1) earned the win in relief for SU, working 2.0 inning, giving up one run on one hit, with two strikeouts
